Flight to Iceland

Husavik

Husavik, a fishing village of 2.500 inhabitants, is a perfect centre for individual tourists and groups travelling in the Northeast. Visitors can during their stay in Husavik choose between a fine hotel, guesthouse and camping.

Husavik is located on the Eastern Shore of Skjalfandi-bay facing the impressive Kinnarfjoll -mountains across the bay. Behind the town the Husavik-mountain rises to 417 m. above sea level and a drive or a walk to the top is a must to enjoy the view from the island Grimsey on the Arctic Circle in the north to the majestic glacier Vatnajokull in the south.

Husavik offers an ample selection of easy hikes through varied landscape for example, along the shores of the bay, up the Husavik mountain or around the lake Botnsvatn where trout fishing is free of charge.

Even though fishing and fish processing is the important industry in Husavik the town is now well known as the whale watching capital of Europe. Whale watching trips from Husavik harbour on traditional fishing boats and passenger boats are getting increasingly popular. Bird watching and sea angling are also quite interesting and enjoyable. The Husavik Whale Centre is the first and only information centre on whales in Iceland; it was opened June 20th 1998.

In the Whale Center you will find: Models of whales, skeletons and skulls of whales; Drawings and information text on all species of whales around Iceland; a life-size model of a Minke whale; demonstration of the evolution of whales; information on various feeding techniques; books on whales and a childrens´ corner. Various videos on whales are shown during opening hours, including a video on "Iceland whaling" as a part of the Whaling Room, which tells the history of whaling around Iceland. The Fish Factory tours, an exiting information tour through the Fish Factory of Husavik are organised by the Husavik Whale Centre during the summer.

The Church in Husavik, built in 1907, is said to be the most beautiful wooden church in Iceland. In the Museum House are a folk museum for the area, a nature museum, art gallery, the library and district archives. A nice all year round heated swimmingpool is open for visitors from early morning to late at night.

Husavik being located just south of the Arctic Circle enjoys 24 hours daylight in summer and the romantic midnight sun frequently paints the evening sky with colours beyond imagination. In the winter when the days are short and the nights are long the dark night sky is frequently decorated with millions of stars and flashing Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis).

Winter excursions are constantly gaining popularity, the options are many and there is something for everybody. Snow-scooter tours, Super-Jeep safaris, fishing through ice and cross-country skiing are just examples of the various ways one can enjoy the splendour of Northeast Iceland in winter. The contrast of hot springs and geothermal areas against snow, ice and frozen waterfalls give explorers the experience of a lifetime.

Husavik is an ideal all year destination with ample recreational opportunities and surrounded by famous natural wonders. North of Husavik is the Tjornes peninsula; known for fossilised seashells from pre-historic times some of which are on display at Hallbjarnarstaðir fossil museum. The Museum at Manarbakki houses an interesting collection of household items from the last centuries.

South of Husavik is the river Laxa, one of Iceland's best and most beautiful salmon-fishing rivers. Laxa flows through an old lava-field with beautiful rock formations and some pseudo-craters; further up the river is the hydroelectric-power station Laxarvirkjun in a beautiful canyon. Within a 45 minute drive is the majestic and beautiful Goðafoss in the glacial river Skjalfandafljót. Lake Myvatn is only 45 km away with its rich bird life and spectacular nature.

About 65-km Northeast of Husavik is the national park of the canyons of the glacial river Jokulsa, with the hoof print like gorge Asbyrgi and Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe.

Within a half day drive from Husavik, in the wilderness of the interior are some well known places of interest in a breathtaking landscape such as the oasis Herðubreiðarlindir at the roots of mountain Herðubreið, queen of Icelandic mountains; Askja a huge volcanic caldera in the Dyngjufjoll mountains; and Kverkfjoll a geothermal area in the northern edge of Vatnajokull glacier.

The above is just to give you some ideas of what you can enjoy and explore during your next visit to Husavik.
